Using scene strips to help work smoothly between the Node Editor and the VSE: When using Blender for motion graphics, there’s some cool handshaking you can do between the Node Editor and Video Sequence Editor. If a shot requires more involved effects than the VSE can provide, switch to the Compositing screen layout and create a new empty scene (I like to name the scene after the shot). Use the Image input node to bring your clip into the Node Editor, adjusting the start and end frames in the node and the scene as necessary. From this point, you can add whatever cool compositing effects you want. When you switch back to the Video Editing screen (it should still be in your editing scene), replace your shot by adding a scene strip in the VSE for your compositing scene. As a bonus, if you delete all of the screen layouts except for Compositing and Video Editing, you can quickly bounce between your composite scene and your editing session using [Ctrl]+[left arrow] and [Ctrl]+[right arrow].
This is one of my favourite add-ons. It allows us to import real-world terrains from Google Earth into Blender. You can download it for free from GitHub. After installing the add-on you should find a GIS menu in the top of the 3d viewport. Choose Basemap under Web/Geodata and proceed with the default settings. A map of the world should be loaded into the viewport. The shortcut G brings up a search menu and brings you anywhere you desire. Increasing the zoom level to a value around 12 seems to be right most of the time. Then use the Middle Mouse Button and Mouse Wheel to move around adjust the zoom. When you are happy with the selected area, press E to project it onto a plane. This is already pretty neat but the terrain data is still missing. For this purpose go back into the GIS Menu and this time choose Get Elevation. The default settings should be fine. Let it load for a few seconds and a displacement map will be added to the plane. And there it is, a real-world terrain in Blender! Beware, that this add-on uses real-world scale. Your plane might be multiple kilometres long.
Want to get started with hard surface modeling in Blender? These tips and tricks can take you far. Some hard surface models in Blender. Have you ever seen a 3D model so cool and intricate, it doesn’t even look like it was made by a human being? Hard surface modeling is the art of creating hard surface objects, often with an industrial or mechanical inclination. Airplanes, weaponry, and robots are all perfectly suited to the hard surface style. How can you hone your skills as a hard surface artist? Here are a couple of Blender tips for beginners interested in hard surface modeling and all the possibilities to be unlocked.
You can create and render vastly more complex scenes by using [Alt]+[D] instead of [Shift]+[D] to duplicate an object. The new object will share the same mesh data as the original, reducing memory usage. Even better, any changes made to one object will also be applied to the others, enabling you to update hundreds of objects at once. When you can get away with it, avoid UV mapping by using a quick-and-dirty flat projection on basic geometry. You can create complex, realistic objects in minutes. In most cases, the result will still look the same from a distance. Find more info at 3darts.org.
