Comprising around 5% of Nicaragua’s total land area, making it the second largest rainforest in the western hemisphere (after the Amazon), the Bosawas Biosphere Reserve has been a UNESCO biosphere reserve since 1997. The main threat to the rainforest comes from Nicaragua’s booming livestock industry. Ranchers have migrated to the reserve en masse where they often pay land traffickers to illegally secure title to land.
Tongass in Alaska is the largest national forest in the United States at 17 million acres in total. It’s a land of ancient forests, towering mountains, and crisp glaciers, and it’s like nothing you’ve ever seen before! This beautiful stretch is home to five species of salmon, humpback and orca whales, otters, beavers, and some of the largest populations of brown bears found in the United States. How’s that for incredible wildlife viewing? It’s not only a place of refuge for wildlife and plants, but also a residence for Alaskans as well, since many people depend on the region’s resources to support their families on a daily basis. To date, the Tongass has about 70,000 people living across 32 communities. So, travel to Alaska to live like the locals and be one with nature!

Daintree Rainforest: This tropical rainforest is found at the north east coast of Queensland in Australia, named after Richard Daintree. It covers around 2,600 km2. The area between Bloomfield River and Mossman Gorge is entirely covered by the forest and also has the Daintree National Park. Its main river is Daintree River. The forest is home to some of the earliest plants on Earth, such as the Lycopsida and Psilotopsida. It contains the highest number of animals and plant species that are very rare to find. Southeast Asian Rainforest: The forest is found in Asia covering Indonesia, Laos, Cambodia, and the Malay Peninsula. It once covered even a greater area in Asia but deforestation destroyed most regions of the rainforest. The forest is home to many rare birds, mammals, amphibians, and reptiles. At one point there were 200 different species of trees in a hectare but the deforestation has put those species in danger. One interesting feature of the rainforest is the dominance of one family of trees, with numerous species of animals, such as Bengal Tiger, Dawn bat, king cobra, and proboscis monkey among others.
The island was created during the Triassic period as a result of volcanic activity, so any wildlife on the island had to swim, fly, or float here. As a result, the only mammal native to Puerto Rico is the bat. In El Yunque you may also see rats and mongoose, the rats brought here on ships as an inherent part of sailing, and the small Indian mongoose imported in 1877 in an attempt to control those very rats in the sugar cane fields. There is an entrance to EYNF via PR 191 – the other side that was split via a huge landslide in the 70’s. Thus I now go a lot to Rio Sabana park and explore that way.
